Biography of Michael Stone

Michael graduated from Cambridge University (England) with a BA in Engineering Science. During a 6-year period at the BBC’s Engineering Research Department, he worked on digital audio and video processing as well as simulating parts of the high definition television (HDTV) picture chain. The latter involved subjective assessment of picture quality, out of which grew an interest in the human interface to technology.

In 1988 he joined Professor Moore’s group, looking at signal processing strategies for both analogue and digital hearing aids. His PhD, 'Spectral Enhancement for the Hearing Impaired', was awarded in 1995. Subsequent work has looked separately at the perceptual effects of processing delays and dynamic range compressors as used in hearing aids. Recent work has been on characterising the dynamic range over which "dip-listening" is possible in both normal and hearing-impaired listeners. A more recent, speculative, strand is on the early detection of noise-induced hearing damage.

He is a fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, an Associate Editor for the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, a corporate member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (UK), and a Chartered Engineer(UK).
